A number of techniques are frequently used for resistive circuits.<\/p>\n<p>Nodal analysis is a method of determining the voltage at the nodes in an electrical circuit with respect to a reference node, using Kirchoff\u2019s current law. Mesh analysis is a method that is used to solve for the current through any component in a planar circuit using Kirchoff\u2019s voltage law. \u00a0In some cases one method is clearly preferred over another. For example, when the circuit contains only voltage sources (or current sources), it is probably easier to use mesh analysis (or node analysis). It is often helpful to consider which method is more appropriate for the problem solution and make the selection.<\/p>\n<p>Thevenin\u2019s theorem, also called Thevenin equivalent, states that if we identify a pair of terminals in any circuit made up of both independent and dependent sources and \u00a0resistors, the circuit can be replaced by an independent voltage source V<sub>oc<\/sub> in series with a resistor R<sub>t<\/sub>. This series combination of V<sub>oc, <\/sub>the Thevenin voltage, and R<sub>t<\/sub>, the Thevenin resistance, is equivalent to the original circuit in the sense that if we connect a same load across the terminals, we would get the same voltage and current at the terminals of the load as we would have with the original circuit. This equivalence holds for all possible values of load resistances. V<sub>oc<\/sub> is the open-circuit voltage of the original circuit across the terminals. R<sub>t<\/sub> can be found by either of the two methods listed below. One is to find the short-circuit current i<sub>sc<\/sub>, then find R<sub>t<\/sub> using<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ece.ucf.edu\/labs\/EEL3123\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-9c303faa9061a1fd030aeabbc8984440_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#82;&#95;&#116;&#61;&#123;&#86;&#95;&#123;&#111;&#99;&#125;&#32;&#92;&#111;&#118;&#101;&#114;&#32;&#105;&#95;&#123;&#115;&#99;&#125;&#125;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"24\" width=\"66\" style=\"vertical-align: -8px;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The other method usually used in less complicated circuits involves deactivating the sources in the circuit, i.e. replacing all \u00a0independent voltage sources with short circuits and all independent current sources with open circuits, and finding the equivalent resistance, which is R<sub>t<\/sub>. Dependent current and voltage sources are not replaced with open circuits or short circuits.<\/p>\n<p>Norton\u2019s theorem, also referred as Norton equivalent, is a dual of Thevenin\u2019s theorem. If we identify a pair of terminals in any circuit made up of both independent and dependent sources and\u00a0 resistors, the circuit can be replaced \u00a0by a parallel combination of an ideal current source i<sub>sc<\/sub> and a conductance G<sub>n<\/sub>, where i<sub>sc<\/sub> is the short-circuit current at the terminals in the original circuit and G<sub>n<\/sub> is the ratio of the short-circuit current to the open-circuit voltage at the terminals in the original circuit.<\/p>\n<p>The four parameters V<sub>oc<\/sub>, R<sub>t<\/sub>, i<sub>sc<\/sub> and G<sub>n<\/sub> are related by<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ece.ucf.edu\/labs\/EEL3123\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-2dd8e0c29ddd6fb6f1753b580f990930_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#86;&#95;&#123;&#111;&#118;&#125;&#61;&#105;&#95;&#123;&#115;&#99;&#125;&#82;&#95;&#116;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"86\" style=\"vertical-align: -3px;\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ece.ucf.edu\/labs\/EEL3123\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-3832650cb0368a3b5eb6eb7c784c48c6_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#71;&#95;&#110;&#61;&#123;&#49;&#32;&#92;&#111;&#118;&#101;&#114;&#32;&#82;&#95;&#116;&#125;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"24\" width=\"65\" style=\"vertical-align: -8px;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For linear circuits containing two or more independent sources, the superposition principle can also be used for circuit analysis. The voltage across (or the current through) any element can be obtained by adding algebraically all the individual voltages (or currents) caused by each independent source acting alone, with all the other independent voltage sources replaced by short circuits and all the other independent current sources replaced by open circuits.<\/p>\n<h2>Preparation<\/h2>\n<h3>Nodal &#038; Mesh Analysis, Thevenin&#8217;s Theorem and Superposition<\/h3>\n<p>For the circuit in Figure 3 &#8211; 1, all 7 resistors have different resistance values. For each resistor, choose any resistance value within the range of 1 k\u2126 to 56 k\u2126 unless specified otherwise. Use mesh analysis to calculate the voltage across each resistor and the current through AB, I<sub>AB<\/sub>.<\/li>\n<li>Leave AB open, as shown in Figure 3 &#8211; 2 (b). Use nodal analysis to calculate the voltage across each resistor as well as the voltage across AB, V<sub>AB<\/sub>.<\/li>\n<li>Find Thevenin\u2019s and Norton\u2019s Equivalent using the results from the previous two steps.<\/li>\n<li>Connect a resistor between nodes A and B. Use Thevenin\u2019s theorem to calculate the current through this resistor for the following 3 resistor values: 1 k\u2126, 2.2 k\u2126 and 4.7 k\u2126.<\/li>\n<li>Leave AB open. Find the voltage across AB, V<sub>AB<\/sub> for the following 3 cases:\n<ol style=\"list-style: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>E<sub>1<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>2<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>2<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>3<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>2<\/sub> are turned off.<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Add the above three voltages. (a) mesh analysis; (b) nodal analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Simulation<\/h2>\n<p>Perform the following circuit simulations using a circuit simulator.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Simulate the circuit in Figure 3 &#8211; 2 (a).<\/li>\n<li>Simulate the circuit in Figure 3 &#8211; 2 (b).<\/li>\n<li>With a resistor connected between nodes A and B, simulate the circuit for the following 3 resistor values: 1 k\u2126, 2.2 k\u2126 and 4.7 k\u2126.<\/li>\n<li>Simulate the circuit in Figure 3 &#8211; 2 (b) for the following 3 cases:\n<ol style=\"list-style: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>E<sub>1<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>2<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>2<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>3<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>2<\/sub> are turned off.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Compare all the simulation results with those determined in PREPARATION.<\/p>\n<h2>Experiment<\/h2>\n<p>Build the circuit in Figure 3 &#8211; 1 on the breadboard. Refer to Section III in Experiment #1 to set the voltages sources in the circuit.<\/p>\n<h3>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mesh Analysis and Nodal Analysis<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Short AB by connecting a wire across nodes A and B. Measure the voltage across each resistor and the current through AB, I<sub>AB<\/sub>. Refer to the BACKGROUND section in Experiment #1 for how to use DMM to read the voltage and current values.<\/li>\n<li>Leave AB open. Measure the voltage across each resistor as well as the voltage across AB, V<sub>AB<\/sub>.<\/li>\n<li>Compare the results from step 1 and 2 with those obtained from PREPARATION and SIMULATION sections.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thevenin\u2019s and Norton\u2019s Theorems<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Set all voltage sources to zero by simply replacing them with wires. With AB open, measure the resistance between AB using DMM. What resistance value are you measuring here? How does this measured value compare to the values obtained earlier in the PREPARATION and SIMULATION?<\/li>\n<li>Connect all voltages sources back into the circuit. With a resistor connected between A and B, measure the current through this resistor using DMM for the following 3 resistor values:\n<ol style=\"list-style: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>1 k\u2126,<\/li>\n<li>2.2 k\u2126,<\/li>\n<li>4.7 k\u2126.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How do these current values compare to those obtained in the PREPARATION and SIMULATION.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Superposition Principle<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>With AB open, measure the voltage across AB, V<sub>AB<\/sub> for the following 3 cases:\n<ol style=\"list-style: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>E<sub>1<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>2<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>2<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>3<\/sub> are turned off;<\/li>\n<li>E<sub>3<\/sub> is turned on while both E<sub>1<\/sub> and E<sub>2<\/sub> are turned off.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Add the above three voltages.
