Overview

The Portable Coilgun is a coilgun that launches projectiles made of ferromagnetic material. This project has military, civilian, and scientific applications and uses. These include defense, electromagnetic rail travel, and magnetic field generation. The project goals include portability, high velocity projectiles, and accuracy. These goals are achieved through the utilization of the concepts of magnetic fields, electronic circuitry, and microcontroller programming.

Coil guns have been an interest to our group due to the numerous potential advantages they hold, including that it is naturally a silent weapon and that it does not rely on gunpowder to fire. Our hand-held gun holds various compoentns including a boost converter, capacitor bank, custom firing circuit, a custom printed circuit board (PCB), velocity sensors, an LCD, and voltage sensors. This project provided design and implentation challenges for both Electrical and Computer engineers.
