AWDEMOTO aims to produce a novel and unique prototype for the electric motorcycle family. Currently there are no “all wheel drive” (AWD) electric motorcycles produced comercially. This prototype will serve as a platform on which to test an AWD systems feasibility on a street motorcycle. An AWD system is inherently complex, however the development of hub motors in the EV industry allow for a simplified AWD configuration by replacing the front wheel. the 1:1 front wheel drive eliminates the need for any complex mechanical transmission. The rear wheel drive system mirrors that of a traditional electric motorbike, consisting of an electric motor mounted to the frame with a chain and sprocket fixed gear power transmission. The engineering challenge lies in coordinating the two motors together by an overarching controller using closed-loop feedback, mechanically adapting the front suspension to accommodate a hub motor, and designing a functional & accessible mounting system for all necessary components.
