ECOspec

Microplastic Identification with Raman Spectroscopy

UCF-fa2025sp2026-G06

Home

Project Description

ECOSpec is a compact, pre-packaged microplastic detection system that contains a laser excitation source, spectrometer, and Raman filtering components. The user can introduce a sample of interest into the system and will receive a live Raman spectrum. This configuration enables the acquisition of characteristic Raman spectra, which allows for the precise identification of microplastic polymer types based on their unique Raman fingerprint. Therefore, not only will the device tell the user if microplastics are detected, it will also provide the type of microplastic. A 785 nm laser will be used for excitation, and the system will be able to detect microplastic particles < 5 mm by 5 mm in size.
