Henry Abshire is an undergraduate student in computer engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF), with a focus on embedded systems. His interests include hardware-software integration, real-time microcontroller applications, and the development of low-cost, efficient automation solutions. Henry has worked on projects involving sensor-driven control systems, motor actuation, and interactive embedded platforms.
Nicholas Heikes is an undergraduate student in Computer Engineering at the University of Central Florida, with a focus in digital systems. His interests lie in integrated circuit design, computer architecture, and hardware modeling, with experience in RTL development, FPGA prototyping, and system-level hardware optimization. Aleksandar Dimitrovski is an associate professor of power engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He
earned his Ph.D. from Saints Cyril and Methodius University. His research focuses on power system modeling, microgrid
protection, and magnetic-electronic power controllers.
Xin Xin is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Central
Florida (UCF). He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, focusing on high-performance memory systems and
computer architecture. His research explores resilient memory subsystems, domain-specific architecture, and reliable
hardware/software systems.
Saleem Sahawneh is an electrical and computer engineering lecturer at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He has a
PhD and master's degree in electrical engineering from UCF. His research focuses on remote sensing, including data
analysis, signal processing, and geophysical retrievals.
Description
The Computerized Automatic Rapid Deck Sorter (C.A.R.D.S.), developed by Group 19 during the Spring/Summer 2025 semesters at the University of Central Florida, is designed to automate the alignment, orientation, and suit-based sorting of standard playing cards. The system features an entry slot for card intake, a suit detection and rejection system, and a mechanical flipping and rotation mechanism to ensure all cards are uniformly oriented. Sorted cards are delivered to dedicated output bins for each suit—hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades—neatly stacked and properly aligned. Using optical sensors, precision motors, and automated logic, C.A.R.D.S. achieves accurate, high-speed card sorting with minimal user intervention. The primary goals of the project include high-throughput operation, 90% sorting accuracy, and cost-efficient production, making it ideal for gaming, recreational, and card-handling applications.
