Project Title:
Self-organizing Control and Scalable Game-theoretical Dispatch of Distributed Generations for High-Penetration Smart Grids

PD/PI Names:
Zhihua Qu and Marwan A Simaan

Project/Grant Period:
09/01/2013 – 08/31/2017

Goals of the Project:
The proposed research addresses the following three fundamental challenges faced by smart grid operators in optimizing the grid performance and reliability while dealing with unpredictable and variable power generations of geographically dispersed DGs.
(i) Self-organizing and cooperative control of distributed energy sources: Future smart grids may consist of thousands of DGs whose power outputs may be varying and unpredictably intermittent and whose communication capabilities are local and limited. Control of these distributed energy sources should enable them to form collaborative microgrids such that their aggregate generation can automatically be dispatched, and the control can only require local and intermittent sensing/communication among the neighboring sources and the network infrastructure.
(ii) Robust operation of distribution networks: As loads change and DG generations vary, automatic multi-time-scale distributed cooperative control of static on-load tap changers, static var compensators, and DGs should be implemented to maintain voltage stability. This requires distributed optimization algorithms that adaptively determine reactive power generations of DGs for both var compensation and voltage regulation.
(iii) Efficient operation of power grid: A smart grid should be able to provide incentives for microgrids to optimize their active and reactive power generations for not only their own economic benefits but also for the benefit of the overall grid operations. Game-theoretical algorithms (scalable with respect to the number of DGs, storage devices, and their microgrids) need to be developed and implemented.
