Introduction to workshop

UCF is proud to present SMART, an intensive 2-week workshop about semiconductor manufacturing and advances in recent technologies.

 

SMART will be offered in Summer 2025 to develop skills in semiconductor manufacturing technologies. Students will participate in hands on activities in the Engineering Cleanroom and other laboratories at UCF. The intent of this course is to provide a comprehensive experience of the complete semiconductor manufacturing process used in academia and industry.

Semiconductor Synergy

This workshop is part of an ongoing initiative by the ECE department for semiconductor workforce development. We have active collaborations with Intel, Texas Instruments and Department funded co-op positions which aims to impart hands-on training in microfabrication tools and processing. Such efforts will provide us with the means to attract top talent enabling our industrial partners to have direct access to a sustainable pipeline of well-prepared talent.

Target Audience

Attendance is open to the general technical community and is not limited to current UCF students. Anyone interested in semiconductor cleanroom fabrication techniques is strongly encouraged to attend this course. The course is suitable for both new and experienced researchers interested in micro-fabrication techniques and applications.

There are a maximum of 12 spots for the workshop and candidates will be chosen based on a Departmental evaluation. Preference will be given to interested faculty from high school and colleges.

Workshop structure

Lecture sessions: Participants will be introduced to the different modules and will be challenged with a problem in semiconductor manufacturing.

Interactive sessions: Participants will present their perspective on the problem and possible solutions.

Laboratory Sessions: Participants will gain hands-on experience and each trainee will fabricate parts of their own device.

Module Materials

Module 1: How it all began: the discovery of silicon to modern semiconductor electronics which are the brains for millions of devices, including space vehicles, car computers, smartphones, medical equipment, appliances, and more.

Module 2: Learn about the CHIPS and Science Act and what it means for the semiconductor ecosystem.

Module 3: Materials used in semiconductor manufacturing and their properties. What is a semiconductor and why is it so important we understand it?

Module 4: Deep dive into the semiconductor manufacturing process. Overview of cleanroom safety, gowning protocol, and substrate preparation. Basic fabrication training intended to introduce first-time users to deposition, etching, lithography, and characterization systems. Participants will use this knowledge to fabricate their own device using cleanroom equipment.
